How Do Ovulation Tests Work?
Our EC-certified ovulation tests work by detecting the rise in luteinizing hormone (LH) in your urine. This surge happens just before ovulation and signals that your body is preparing to release an egg. A positive test means you are in your most fertile window, usually 12–48 hours before ovulation, which is the best time to try for pregnancy.
Because an egg can only be fertilised for 6–24 hours after ovulation, knowing when your LH surge occurs can make a big difference in timing.
How to Use
For Midstream Tests
- Remove the test from its sealed wrapper.
- Hold the handle and place the absorbent tip in your urine stream for 10 seconds.
- Place the test flat, facing up, while it develops.
For Strip Tests
- Collect a small urine sample in a clean, dry cup.
- Dip the white tip of the strip into the urine up to the MAX line for 10 seconds.
- Place the strip flat and allow it to develop.
Wash your hands and wait for your results to appear.
Reading Your Results
- Control line only: The test is working, but no LH surge detected
- Test line lighter than control line: LH is present but not yet surging. Keep testing daily — ovulation is approaching.
- Test line as dark or darker than control line: A positive result — your LH surge is happening, and ovulation is likely within 12–48 hours. This is your most fertile time.
When to Start Testing
- If you know your cycle length, start testing a few days before your expected ovulation.
- If you’re unsure, begin from day 10 of your cycle (counting from the first day of your period).
- Testing at the same time each day (after 10am) gives more consistent results.
Irregular Cycles & Testing
If your cycles are irregular, you may need to test over a longer stretch to catch your LH surge.
- Testing for 5 days predicts ovulation in about 80% of cycles.
- Extending to 10 days increases accuracy to 95%.
